Less useful than coding posts, less imaginative than stories.

On Innate Morality

I was listening to some Protestant philosophy podcast recently, and was interested in a line of reasoning they had regarding atheism. The story goes that when considering the source of ethical values, the atheist claims to have arrived at them by purely rational principles, and the theist claims that those very rational principles are the product of thousands of years of Judeo-Christian cultural development and cannot be extricated from God. Naturally, I think they’re both wrong.

Orthodox and Reformed Scrum, a Retrospective

I have recently been doing a lot of Scrum process at work. Enough to make me feel entitled to critique it1. I figure that so long as we’re being assessed on our implementation of the Scrum process, I should be able to assess Scrum on its implementation of a software process. Note that I have already discussed the term “user story”. So I’m going to try something different today, and actually discuss salient conceptual points. Eventually.

A Straw-Woman Argument

I strongly support gender equality, but it bugs me that sometimes modern gender equality is mis-interpreted as pro-woman. Political correctness also bugs me, particularly when people try to rewrite the English language because some words or expressions might be deemed offensive. Leaving aside for a moment that being offended is a state of mind in the reader, a language is not suitably expressive if it cannot provoke an emotional response (including offending people). I thus will try to provoke an emotional response with this short speech, modeled as being by and for some of the people who bug me in a non-insectoid way.

Paltry PC Ports

I got a new game recently. It inspired me to rant about porting console games to PC. I used to think that it should happen more often, but I’m no longer convinced that game developers are competent enough to turn even a good console game into a quality PC port.
